Creative Control/Creative Retouch

In addition to being waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freezeproof, the durable DMC-TS5 also boasts pressure resistance. Take this camera with you on all of your photographic journeys. From fishing or camping in the springtime, diving, snorkeling, surfing in the summer, mountain climbing in autumn, or skiing and snowboarding in winter, the DMC-TS5 is an all-year-round camera that records stunning memories in beautiful photos and videos.

The DMC-TS5 features pressure resistance of 100 kgf thanks to the reinforced rib structure of its internal design. You can safely put it in your pocket or backpack with ease.

With waterproof performance to a depth of 43ft, equivalent to the “IPX8″ standard, the DMC-TS5 delivers active shooting on the beach, underwater or in a pool. If the camera gets dirty, soil and dust can be easily washed off with water.

The DMC-TS5 is shockproof from a height of 6.6ft in accordance with the “MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock” test standard. Shoot actively while moving around with the camera in one hand worry-free.

GPS and GLONASS

The GPS (Global Positioning System) in the DMC-TS5 complies with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System), taking advantage of it’s increased number of satellites, giving you better accuracy.

Place Name and Landmark Information

The LUMIX’s GPS shows the name of the Country/Region, State/Prov/County, County/Township, City/Town/Village and Landmark using the internal data to give you real-time information on your location when taking photos.

Playback

The photos and videos with the location names are automatically sorted in a virtual folder alphabetically in the camera allowing you to quickly find them.

GPS Log/Altimeter Log

In addition to the Altimeter logging function, the DMC-TS5 records GPS logging. This allows memorizing travel distances which can be displayed on the Google Earth application.

3D Shooting Capability

Photos or videos recorded in AVCHD on the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Cards are easy to view on a Panasonic VIERA TV. Simply insert the card into the SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card slot on a VIERA TV or DIGA Blu-ray Disc™ player to playback your photos and videos. You can also use an optional HDMI micro cable to output the photos and videos you took from the camera directly to the TV for VIERA Link. The WT60 series is the FULL HD 3D, IPS LED LCD flagship series and is available in two screen sizes – the TC-L47WT60, 47-inch class and the TC-L55WT60, 55-inch class.

The WT60 is equipped with 1080p resolution and a wide viewing angle .  The 2D-3D conversion, transforms 2D content to 3D Images in real-time, and local dimming and Clear Panel Pro further enhance picture quality.  The models feature three HDMI ports, allowing for 3D video and audio features.  In addition, the panel’s backlight scanning utilizes 4200 BLS technology, which provides a clearer picture to enjoy fast-moving scenes.  The WT60 also features Panasonic’s first-ever built in camera for enhanced connectivity with VIERA Connect^TM apps and technologies.

 EM60 Series

The EM60 series provides the consumer with 1080p resolution, slim LED and narrow bezel design. There are two screen sizes in the EM60 series – the TC-L39EM60, 39-inch class and TC-L50EM60, 50-inch class. All offer media player, with two HDMI connections and one USB port. Dot noise reduction technology enhances image quality of content.  In addition, EM60 Series’ backlight scanning utilizes up to 240 BLB.

XM6 Series

The TC-L32XM6, 32-inch class model features 720p resolution with two HDMI connections with one USB port.  The XM6 series reflect Panasonic’s minimalistic design with a slim bezel.  Dot noise reduction technology enhances image quality of content.

The new VIERA® ZT60 Plasma Series is equipped with a master studio panel, producing deep black levels for stunning picture quality. The new design maximizes the natural properties of glass and metal to visually express the superb performance of display and color. With the addition of a new Louver filter, the ZT Series line delivers improved external light shading, clarity and light transmittance. The new panel reduces reflections to create sharper pictures with higher contrast in bright environments.
Building on last year’s “Glass and Metal” design concept, the 2013 VIERA models continue to focus on sleek designs while delivering pristine picture display and superior sound quality. The VT60 Series includes built-in side speakers, and a thin metal pedestal with one sheet of glass featured on the ZT and VT Series models delivers a minimalist aesthetics and design. The ZT60 and VT60 Series models are also equipped with a Dual Core with Hexa Processing Engine.

ZT60 Series
The ZT60 series is Panasonic’s Full HD 3D Plasma flagship series and is available in two screen sizes – the TC-P65ZT60, 65-inch class and the TC-P60ZT60, 60-inch class. With 1080p resolution, the ZT60 series comes with advanced features for connectivity including My Home Screen, Swipe and Share 2.0, Touch Pad Controller, three HDMI and three USB connectors, along with VIERA ConnectTM, allowing consumers to connect to applications through the internet via built in Wireless LAN and Web Browser. 2D-3D conversion transforms 2D content to 3D images in real-time. The ZT Series also includes two pairs of Active Shutter 3D Eyewear.

The VIERA ZT60 Series offers a “Beyond the Reference” level of picture quality. Ultimate black color, contrast and crystal crisp picture are achieved thanks to the new Studio Master Panel with newly developed panel driving method and panel structure with direct glass layer. The front glass is directly attached to the Plasma panel itself by Panasonic’s exclusive crafting methods. As a result of the improvement, dim and double images are cut off by eliminating the air gap layer between the front glass and Plasma panel. The ZT60 series enhances compatibility between ultimate picture quality and stylish design. The quality of the ZT60’s 3D images is greatly enhanced, with clear, natural Full HD 3D images because of reduced crosstalk. 3000 Focused-field Drive also produces image resolution of 1080 lines for 2D images, to provide crisp, clear image motion. A wider color gamut (DCI 98% Color Space) is achieved thanks to a newly developed pure red phosphor. One of the biggest joys of owning a home theater is watching a great action movie like Skyfall, the latest James Bond film. Typically, I prefer to watch high-budget movies on Blu-ray—after all, when I watch a blockbuster, I want the sound and image quality to be as good as possible. Last week, iTunes made Skyfall available for purchase one week earlier than the Blu-ray release. Because it is the middle of winter, I decided to succumb to the urge for instant gratification; I bought the movie and watched it instead of waiting.

What I saw truly surprised me. From the very first moment to the very last credit, I scrutinizedSkyfall for any significant flaws in the image quality. To my surprise, iTunes managed to get through the whole film without any obvious signs of compression. I have an aversion to banding, macroblocking, smearing pixelation, and tearing, and I saw no egregious artifacts. Impressed, I decided to see how Vudu compares. The Vudu HDX version became available Friday Feb. 9, still four days ahead of the Blu-ray release, so I bought the Vudu version and began my comparison.

Conventional wisdom holds that Vudu offers the best streaming quality. Vudu promotes their TruHD encoding process, claiming an ability to preserve film grain while avoiding pixilation artifacts. In the past, I have found this to be true, at least in relative terms. Shadow regions tend to be much smoother looking in Vudu streams as opposed to iTunes downloads. Vudu also boasts support for Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound on some devices, beating iTunes’ Dolby Digital 5.1 support. But since encoding algorithms are improving all the time, the service with the best quality could potentially change over time, or even from movie to movie.

For the Skyfall comparison, I utilized the iTunes desktop application on a PC running Windows 8. I dismissed using Vudu through a browser, because it only offers 2-channel sound and the quality was clearly unacceptable. I tried out Vudu on a Roku as well as through my 55″ Vizio TV’s built-in app. Unacceptable artifacts abounded, but at least the Dolby surround worked. I found the best implementation of Vudu on my PS3, with 7.1 surround and much smoother gradients than the other Vudu streams. Bravo to the PS3.

Skyfall is a very impressive movie, a special-effects extravaganza with a complex and challenging color palette. Quite a few scenes in the movie present a serious challenge to compression algorithms, with fast action and overlapping layers, action filmed in the dark with monochrome palettes ranging from all blue to orange. If there are any flaws in the encoding process, they would show up in these shadows as banding, pixelation, and random noise.

The iTunes version of Skyfall somehow managed to play through without a single distracting artifact calling attention to itself. Vudu was also excellent 95 percent of the time, but when it came to difficult scenes, Vudu struggled more frequently. What makes the new iTunes version look so natural?

The answer seems to be in the grain. iTunes appears to preserve film grain at all costs, even if it means losing some details, like high-contrast lines. Vudu tends to smooth out areas that lack significant texture. As soon as you smooth out a dark tone and compress it, you end up with blocky artifacts, and that is what I kept seeing in the Vudu version. The PS3 kept the blocking to a minimum, but it was still visible. The flip side to Vudu’s approach is that it sometimes manages to preserve sharp lines that iTunes obscures.

iTunes preserves shadow gradient integrity but sacrifices details to do so

After studying the three formats (iTunes, Vudu HDX, and Blu-ray), I found the Blu-ray remains the highest quality source—no surprise there. Pixel peeping is the fine art of scrutinizing individual pixels while ignoring the image as a whole. I photographed freeze-frames from the movie with a professional camera and scrutinized the results in Photoshop. I would not expect the average viewer to do the same, after all nobody watches a big-screen TV from 2 feet away. Proper pixel peeping can reveal exactly how much more information is preserved thanks to higher bit rates and better compression.

At a normal viewing distance, however, the missing detail in the iTunes version is not readily apparent. The movie plays through without any hint that it is a highly compressed download. The largest difference I noticed was not even visual—it was the sound. The iTunes version suffers a little bit for using 5.1 Dolby Digital encoding, while Vudu’s 7.1 surround was more dynamic and enveloping, coming rather close to the Blu-ray’s shattering explosiveness. For some home-theater addicts, that could be a deciding factor, but I did not think it was a big deal.

My conclusion? If you are going to stream or download, Skyfall is better on iTunes than Vudu. Enjoy the show.

Update: A thank you AVS members who brought this to my attention. iTunes 720p files can look better than their 1080p equivalents. I had to see for myself and the results are surprising but undeniable. When it comes to fidelity iTunes 720p has the best overall image quality, especially during difficult to render scenes. Here are two examples.

In light of this observation, future comparisons will also include examples of the iTunes 720p version as well as 1080p.

So there you have it; your new home theater (or Home Cinema) all ready to go. You have the room built just like you would like it, all the new equipment is now installed, and you want to have that first movie party. But wait! Something is missing. Where is the popcorn?

When Brenda and I were planning our theater, we made sure popcorn of some sort was on the list. Ok, sure, it was made with a microwave and came in a bag. But come on, we all have to start somewhere right? Even our theater gear was like that. I started out long ago with a 52” Rear projection TV and a Dolby Digital Pro-Logic receiver. But the popcorn just could not be left out. So, as mentioned, we went out and bought a small popcorn machine (Aka Microwave) that would fit on shelf along with the small, collage type, refrigerator. There were had it, in all it’s limited glory, a snack bar ready for opening night.

Over the last few years with our Home Cinema, things changed. The room started to take on a look and feel that is needed to make the movie experience just that, an experience. We started looking for items here and their that would add to the cinema. Wall art, trays, sculptures, a marquee, poster frames, and even a “Now Playing” case stand. It is items like these that just add to your room. We found some of the items locally, but most were found on-line in the great electronic shopping mall we call the Internet.

Ok so you are that the point you are looking for something to make your cinema more of an experience. So let me see if I can be of help with locating some items you may desire.

First and foremost, you need to set the movie mood and how better to do that than add posters to your entrance way or in your room? A place with a very large selection of posters can be found at http://www.AllPosters.com. You will find past and upcoming movie posters to fit any taste. But remember you will need something to put these little mood setters in. Some of you may want to display them in just a standard snap-in frame, but for that special entranceway, you may just want a lit frame with the chase lights you see in actual movie Cineplex’s. For the frames, check out Home Theater Express (http://www.ht-express.com) and Home Theatre Interiors (http://hometheatreinteriors.com). You will find a large selection of different types at all price ranges.

It is hard to just point you to those sites for just poster frames, for you will see they sell other items that can help transform your room into a cinema. There is such a selection of items to choose from to help you in your quest. From wall art, the “Artisan Director Cut” is my favorite, to even soda fountains; you will find all kind of items for your needs. However, you may not want to forget that one little item, that DVD “Now Playing” marquee. For that and yet more unique items, be sure to stop in at Stargate Cinema (http://www.stargatecinema.com). They also have a selection of items and even a 3D poster frame that is backlit.

But let’s get back to what is really important shall we? Popcorn! It is that special smell that will really get the experience going for your guest as soon as they walk into your home. It can be microwave popcorn, air popped, or the best way, with a nifty and great looking actual popcorn machine. There is nothing like an actual popcorn machine to set the mood with not only that special smell, but also give that extra room appeal with the look that only it can provide.

There are a lot of popcorn machines out in the market. They come in different sizes and, of course, with different options. 4 oz., 6 oz, and 8 oz. are the units usually used in the home. You can find them in an antique look or even modern with a neon sign. They are made to go right on a counter top or you can add a popcorn cart to the unit so it can stand on it’s own. No matter what you choose, you will find that the addition of a machine like this will add to your cinema and make it something even more special.

But one of the best parts of the popcorn machines is that they are a synch to use because you purchase pre-measured popcorn packets. These packets include the oil (in many different styles from corn to sunflower); the salt, and of course the pre-measured popcorn. It is as easy as heat, poor, pop, and serve. Speaking of serving, you also of course can buy the same popcorn buckets or bags you received at your local movie house. Thus again even adding more to the “affect”. But wait, there’s more! You could go as far as even picking up one of the “fake butter” dispensers. That’s right, “squirt”, “squirt” onto the popcorn the same “butter” that you again enjoy in your local theater. Boy, are we talking some good fun now. In case you did not notice, the above-mentioned sites also carry the items I just spoke about…so enjoy your browsing.

All in all your personal home theater, cinema, is what you make it. You can do as little or as much as you care. Remember always though, this room was your dream, your vision, so be sure to make as such.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the fourth installment in the popular film series that stars Tom Cruise as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt. As a fan I looked forward to seeing it and am happy to report that it’s an excellent addition not only to the franchise but the genre as well. It’s edgy, fun and contains a couple of defining set pieces that enhance the thrill factor quite nicely. Speaking of thrilling, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol comes to Blu-ray via a solid offering from Paramount Home Entertainment that features reference quality high definition video, rip roaring 7.1 channel Dolby TrueHD lossless surround sound and a decent assortment of bonus supplements that look behind the scenes at the making of the film. I had a great time with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol which makes for rewarding popcorn entertainment that comes highly recommended. Enjoy!

The girl with the dragon tattoo

The girl with the dragon tattoo is a film adaptation of the book by Stieg Larsson. It is a thoroughly engaging albeit dark film that runs the gamut as it takes us on a captivating psychological thrill ride while introducing one of the most intriguing female characters ever. Alongside David Fincher’s masterful direction is a terrific cast lead by the superb performance by Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara in the title role. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring excellent high definition video, rewarding lossless sound and four hours of supplemental material that include interviews of the cast/crew, and an in-depth look behind the scenes at the production. The girl with the dragon tattoo is a must see and comes highly recommended.

A Separation

A separation comes from the mind of writer/director Asghar Farhadi and is a superbly crafted dramatic film that speaks to the human condition via a densely drawn landscape with morally provocative questions and emotive familial themes that beat to a culturally different but universal drum. It comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring gratifying high definition video, crystal clear lossless sound and insightful supplemental material. I thoroughly enjoyed A separation and give it my highest recommendation.

Cinderella Diamond Edition

Cinderella is among the beloved of the Disney Classic animated feature films. Seeing it again after so many years brought back fond childhood memories. Kudos to Disney on a spectacular Blu-ray Disc offering that presents this wonderful family film looking and sounding better than ever. Its complimentary set of bonus materials includes exclusive Blu-ray and interactive features that present fans with a great way to enhance the high definition experience while taking a peek behind the curtain to learn some interesting background on the film. This excellent Blu-ray release will make for a welcomed addition to your Disney Collection and comes highly recommended.

The Avengers

Any expectations that I had for The Avengers were easily met thanks to solid casting, apt writing/direction and big budget production values that added up to the most exciting film experience of the year. This review marked the third time I have seen it and it hasn’t lost any of its luster. It thunders onto Blu-ray in a four disc set that includes 3D/2D Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy (the subject of this review) and a standard Blu-ray/DVD combo set. It features resplendent high definition video quality and bombastic 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio sound. I wasn’t blown away by the 3D presentation but it has its share of involving moments that effectively draws you into the action, especially during the last 45 minutes of the film. The supplemental offering isn’t comprehensive but offers a good mix of content that is worth exploring. If you’re set up for 3D that is the way to go but you can’t miss with either version as this is a must own Blu-ray release that will thrill fans and enthusiasts. Enjoy!

The Descendants

Nominated for 5 Academy Awards, The Descendants is moving, funny, wonderfully enacted/directed and simply one of the best films of 2011. It makes its way onto Blu-ray in a solid offering from 20th Century Fox that features excellent high definition video, crystal clear lossless sound quality and a complimentary assortment of bonus features. This one comes highly recommended. Enjoy!

Madagascar 3: Europe’s most wanted 3D

Madagascar 3: Europe’s most wanted is a fun family movie that is reminiscent of the original and rejoins the audience with these lovable characters as well as a few new ones that are sure to bring a smile to your face. Paramount and DreamWorks has brought it to Blu-ray Disc in this three disc package that boasts exemplary high definition audio/video and an entertaining 3D presentation that enhances the experience. Add to that a complimentary assortment of bonus supplements including Blu-ray Disc exclusives and you have a rewarding offering that the whole family can enjoy.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

For me Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a timeless, superbly quotable and classic comedy that finds the zany British troupe at the top of the game. It makes its debut on Blu-ray Disc from Sony in an excellent package that features faithful high definition video, complimentary lossless sound and a strong supplemental offering that includes Blu-ray exclusives as well previously released extras. If you’re a fan this is a must have plain and simple.

Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures

Indiana Jones needs little introduction and has thrilled fans the world over since his introduction in 1981. The creative collaboration of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas treated us to a swashbuckling action/adventure hero that entertained a new generation. There have been varying degrees of devotion to each installment with everyone (including this humble writer) agreeing that Raiders of the Lost Ark is the series crowing achievement. No matter which is your favorite there is no question that we have all impatiently waited for the Indiana Jones films to come to Blu-ray. They have arrived and there’s no question that they have never looked better on home video.

I am a bit disappointed in the video quality of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Director Steven Spielberg oversaw its restoration so I guess we will have to assume that what we see is what he intended. I am not sure if that will be consolation to those hoping for reference quality video but truth be told it still looks very good in high definition. The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio surround mixes compliment each film with John Williams’ memorable music featured center stage. Paramount has included a great supplemental offering including two brand new behind the scenes documentaries for Raiders. I am thrilled to add Indiana Jones: The complete adventures to my Blu-ray library and while I’m sure most of you have already it preordered I’ll say it anyway, it comes highly recommended.

Homeland Season 1

Winner of the 2012 Golden Globe for Best Television Series, Drama Homeland is an engaging, character driven TV drama that features excellent writing that revolves around a post 9/11 narrative that takes audiences on a tautly paced and provocative trip down the rabbit hole. It makes its way to Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox via a satisfying offering that features rewarding high definition video quality, crystal clear lossless sound and a middling supplemental package. If you’re a fan or are looking for a worthwhile TV series to check out on Blu-ray Homeland – season one deserves a look.

Prometheus 3D

Prometheus isn’t perfect but it strives to be and is more than the total sum of its parts. Ridley Scott’s vision brought to life is grandiose, engaging and in tune with the quintessence of what made Alien special. It comes to Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in this spectacular 4 disc package that features superlative 3D video, reference quality 7.1 channel lossless sound and a comprehensive supplemental offering that takes viewers deep inside the world of Prometheus. Prometheus is highly recommended viewing and this terrific Blu-ray release is just the ticket. Enjoy!

Moonrise Kingdom

Director/co-writer Wes Anderson paints an unconventional and rewardingly quirky portrait of young love in this charming, funny and whimsical comedy/romance. Newcomers Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman are terrific as the devoted young lovers and are favorably supported by an excellent cast headed by Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand. It comes to Blu-ray from Universal Studios Home Entertainment featuring satisfying and faithful high definition video, crystal clear DTS-HD Master Audio sound and a sparse supplemental offering that provides only a glimpse behind the scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom and highly recommend that you check it out on Blu-ray.

Jaws

Jaws is one of the most popular films of all time and is a classic piece of American Cinema that is beloved by people the world over. This highly anticipated Blu-ray release is a rewarding achievement that revitalizes the film’s original elements. The restored high definition video presents this film in a new light and the lossless 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround mix aggrandizes the soundtrack without ostentatious display. The assortment of bonus supplements includes Blu-ray Exclusive content, cast/crew interviews, behind the scenes footage and more. Jaws is a cinematic gem and a personal favorite that has finally come to Blu-ray. I am happy to report that Universal Studios has gone the extra mile to provide fans with the opportunity to experience it looking and sounding better than ever. This is a must have Blu-ray offering plain and simple.

Hugo 3D

Based on the book “The invention of Hugo Cabret” by Brian Selznick, Hugo is a grandiose and rewarding cinematic gem that has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards. It doesn’t ask but that you sit back, take it in and try to see it in the spirit from which it is intended. Martin Scorsese is such a master craftsman. Hugo comes to Blu-ray Disc from Paramount Home Entertainment in this Limited Edition 3D offering that features superlative high definition audio/video including one of the more entertaining 3D presentations I have seen. The supplemental package isn’t an abundant one however what’s there is well worth watching. Hugo is also available in a two disc standard Blu-ray version for those who aren’t 3D ready. Either way you’re in for a treat.

Singin’ in the rain: 60th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition

Singin’ in the rain is a charming, funny and endearing musical with a contemporary flavor that hasn’t lost its luster 60 years after its release. It makes its Blu-ray debut from Warner Home Video featuring beautifully restored high definition video that is sure to please even discerning videophiles. Fans have a choice of either the 60th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD combo release or this 3 Disc 60th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition that comes housed in an attractive, sturdy, embossed cardboard case with fitted velvet inserts to hold the contents which include a 48-page hard cover book, reproductions of the original theatrical posters from the film’s premier and a full-size commemorative umbrella. Either way you can’t go wrong with this highly recommended and classic film that has found a home in my Blu-ray library.

The War

The War is a seven episode series, produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, that examines the myriad of ways in which the Second World War touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America. By telling the stories of ordinary people in four quintessentially American towns – Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and the tiny farming town of Luverne, Minnesota – the series portrays this enormous worldwide catastrophe on an intimate, human scale.

This is a powerful, moving and compelling documentary film that astonished me, saddened me, angered me, and made me proud to be an American. The War comes to Blu-ray Disc in this six disc offering that features satisfying high definition video quality, involving lossy surround sound and nearly two hours of bonus material. No matter what you think you know about World War II seeing The War offers a perspective that is sure to enlighten. PBS is offering repeat airings of The War on May 20th and May 27th. If you haven’t already seen it, it’s well worth your time. For those that would like to own it this Blu-ray offering from Paramount Home Entertainment is the ticket.

Titanic 3D

Winner of 11 Academy Awards Titanic is a sweeping and memorable epic film that remains among my personal favorites. It makes its debut on Blu-ray in this four disc offering that includes resplendent 3D/2D high definition video, terrific 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound and a comprehensive assortment of bonus supplements that presents fans with an in-depth look behind the scenes and beyond. In addition to this release Titanic is available in a four disc Blu-ray release that contains the 2D version, DVD (parts 1&2), and the separate bonus material disc. Unless you want the DVD or definitively never plan to go the 3D route my recommendation would be to get this release. If you don’t currently have a3D capable system you’ll have the film in 3D should you upgrade in the future. This outstanding Blu-ray package from Paramount Home Entertainment gets my highest recommendation.

Empire of the sun

Empire of the sun is based on the autobiographical novel by J.G Ballard. It was nominated for six Academy Awards and is a gripping and emotive coming of age story about the loss of innocence. It is among my favorite films from the nineteen eighties and I am thrilled that it has finally come to high definition. Its debut on Blu-ray from Warner Home Video is a good one that features beautifully restored video, gratifying lossless sound quality, a limited but worthwhile supplemental package and Digibook packaging. This release is a must have for fans and well worth considering for those experiencing Empire of the sun for the first time.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection

Alfred Hitchcock’s films are timeless. He knows how to tell a story, how to lure the audience in and exactly when to lower the boom. His films aren’t just driven by suspense but are alluring from careful examination of the characters and how they fit into the narrative like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle. This 15 disc collection 13 of which are making their high definition debut on Blu-ray, represent some of the finest works from the universally acclaimed Master of Suspense. These captivating landmark films are some the genre’s most enduring and spine-tingling classics.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection comes to Blu-ray featuring excellent overall video quality that in all but a few cases appears faithful to the original source, and crystal clear lossless sound. The supplemental package is hit or miss with the more well known films getting the gravy. Regardless this is solid offering from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. I am thrilled to add it to my collection and it comes recommended for fans and film enthusiasts alike.

Brave 3D

I liked Brave. It’s not quite as evocative and endearing as some of the more popular films to come from Pixar but it is entertaining and fun just the same. Speaking of entertaining and fun, Brave represents one of the finest animated high definition presentations I have seen on Blu-ray. This is true of both the 3D and 2D experiences. Couple that with reference quality Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless surround sound and a boatload of bonus material and this is a highly recommended and must have release for Pixar fans.

American Horror Story Season 1

American Horror Story is a compelling, well written and envelope pushing TV Horror/Drama that works on a variety of levels. It successfully ties together a series of storylines that delve deep into the rabbit hole that the Harmon family has fallen into. It makes its way to Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox featuring excellent high definition video quality, rewarding lossless sound and a complimentary assortment of bonus supplements that looks behind the scenes while offering insights from the cast/crew. I watched all twelve season one episodes with my wife. We are hooked and eagerly look forward to the premiere of season two on October 17th. If you enjoy a spooky good time, check out American Horror Story on Blu-ray.

Finding Nemo

For Disney/Pixar fans Finding Nemo is among the most anticipated Blu-ray Disc releases to date. It is a marvelous family film that has an endearing charm and entertaining story that people of all ages can appreciate. I was excited to learn that its high definition debut would include 3D as well as 2D versions. Going into this review of its 3D converted video I kept my expectations in check but am happy to report that the experience was not only excellent but enhanced my enjoyment of the film.

In addition its 2D high definition audio/video are reference quality which fall in line with the type of technically proficient Blu-ray offerings we have come to expect from Disney. This five disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition includes new bonus supplements as well as previously released extras. The new features are worth exploring and contain interactive content along with new insights from the filmmakers. If you have a 3D capable setup this release is a no brainer. If not the standard 2D Blu-ray version is another option. Either way if you’re a Finding Nemo fan, pick it up on Blu-ray.

The Flowers of War

Based on the novel “The 13 Flowers of war” by Yan Geling, The Flowers of war is a compelling, sometimes disturbing and evocative drama that speaks to the human condition in its portrayal of how people even under the direst of circumstance can rise to the occasion. While it isn’t a perfect film I was drawn in by the engaging nature of the story, strong performances by the young cast, and the excellent production elements. It debuts on Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment featuring rewarding high definition video, superlative 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio sound and a complimentary supplemental package that takes a peek behind the curtain at the making of the film. The Flowers of war is recommended viewing that belongs at the top of your rental queue.

Hatfields and McCoys

Based on the destructive Hatfield and McCoy feud, Hatfields and McCoys is a gritty, disturbing and powerful miniseries that viscerally portrays the bitter struggle that ensued between these families and the devastation left in its wake. I found it to be an earthy, elucidating and compelling drama that features excellent performances and complimentary direction/production elements. It comes to Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home entertainment featuring exemplary high definition audio/video and a disappointing supplemental offering that consists of a bland making of documentary and music video. This is a poignant and engaging film experience that comes highly recommended.

Lawrence of Arabia

Winner of 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture (1962), Lawrence of Arabia, David Lean’s sweeping and memorable epic is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential films in the history of cinema. Its widely anticipated release in high definition has arrived and the results are spectacular. In honor of its 50th anniversary Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has delivered a faithful and beautiful video restoration on Blu-ray that is accented by an equally wonderful lossless soundtrack. Couple that with a complimentary assortment of bonus features and you have a superb home video offering befitting of the film’s status. This is highly recommended and a must have for fans and film enthusiasts.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is a grandiose and epic style action film that strikes the genre chords with aplomb. On its own it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessor but it is a solidified and ultimately fitting finale to one of the best movie franchises ever. As one of the year’s most anticipated Blu-ray releases I am pleased to report that the wait was well worth it. This is a terrific offering from Warner Home Video that boasts superlative DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound, reference quality high definition video and a worthy supplemental package that explores the making of the film and its ties to the Batman lore. This is a must have Blu-ray release plain and simple.

The James Bond 50th Anniversary Collection

Even though I haven’t had the opportunity to review this terrific set I have received numerous queries regarding its absence on this list. Therefore in light of the support it has received from our membership I have added it and thank those that felt it worthy enough to contact me.
