ESPN Plans NBA Finals in 3D

Last weekend, Canadian hockey fans with 3D televisions got to watch CBC’s second foray into 3D sports: the February 20 Heritage Classic Outdoor game between the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens.

What about the other professional winter sport: basketball? Nothing so far in Canada. In the U.S., ESPN has started showing NBA games on its 3D channel, starting with a December 10 game between the Miami Heat and New York Knicks. In a weird bit of timing, this was one night before CBC’s first 3D Hockey Night in Canada telecast.

ESPN 3D has four more regular-season NBA games scheduled. And it has announced will carry the entire NBA finals in 3D HD, along with six games from earlier rounds.

I’ve seen demos of basketball in 3D, and I think the game really lends itself to 3D presentation. Will Canadian hoops fans be able to put on their 3D glasses in June to catch the NBA finals in three dimensions? It sure would be nice if cable and satellite TV providers like Bell, Cogeco, Rogers, Shaw and Telus carried some of these games on their 3D channels.

3net, the joint venture television network from Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications and IMAX Corporation today announced that DIRECTV will be the first distributor to launch 3net, the 24/7 3D network, beginning February 13, 2011. 3net will initially be available to millions of DIRECTV customers across the country. 3net will go live at 8:00 PM ET on DIRECTV (channel 107) with a primetime slate featuring world premieres of new, one-hour, native 3D original programs CHINA REVEALED and FORGOTTEN PLANET, in addition to the world 3D television premiere of INTO THE DEEP 3D.

Throughout February, the network will offer an unprecedented rollout of original 3D series and new program debuts every night at 9:00 PM ET. 3net will deliver compelling, native 3D content to the marketplace and thus serve as a critical driver for consumer adoption of in-home 3D entertainment.
